Interesting Instrument Options For Your Child

By Madeleine Bridgeman

Most children look forward to their last few years in primary school because it is during this time that they will be able to choose a musical instrument to play. Many studies have shown that music education greatly enhances academic performance; however, some children would rather learn how to play an instrument that is not available for instruction. So in this case, you will want to consider attending a music school.

Many kids these days would love learning how to play the guitar, and there are several different types of guitars to consider. You could opt for the acoustic guitar which is a great way to start out, or perhaps your child dreams of performing in a rock band and wants to learn how to play the electric guitar or bass guitar. In the last few years, many people have been taking ukulele lessons, as well, and this can be an excellent option for a very young musician.

The piano is an excellent instrument to learn because children will learn how to read music in the bass clef and treble clef, as well as learning about major and minor chords. This can make adding a new instrument easier in the future. You also might think about keyboarding lessons, which might seem more fun than the traditional piano lesson, although they are essentially leaning the same skill.

At school, a child interested in percussion instruments can learn a lot about the different types of instruments included in bands and orchestras, such as many different types of drums and special instruments like cymbals, gongs and the triangle. However, they can't really play like rock star such as Keith Moon or Dave Grohl or Ringo Starr. So if your child would love to play the drums like a true rock legend, private drum lessons are definitely a great way to go.

There are plenty of other interesting instruments to consider, such as the autoharp or even an old-fashioned instrument such as the accordion. Perhaps your child loves music, but would rather learn how to sing songs than play them on an instrument or perhaps even wants to write music. Songwriting or vocal classes are a good option for a child who would rather perform the song itself or actually create original music. There are local schools, including San Juan Capistrano's own Los Rios Rock School, that offer these types of lessons.

If you need San Clemente music lessons, Dana Point music lessons or perhaps Laguna Niguel music lessons, Los Rios Rock School is nearby and offers private lessons in virtually any instrument you can imagine, as well as voice lessons and songwriting classes. Students not only enjoy a weekly one-hour lesson, the tuition also includes an actual rock band experience. The students form bands and perform at popular Orange County venues such as the House of Blues or Stillwater or the Coach House.
