How A Leather Knife Roll Is Made

By Daniel Wilson

Chefs or chefs at heart really love knives. It is because they are used in most food preparations. In fact, they bring these knives almost everywhere.

As much as possible, these objects must be delivered in a safest and harmless way. That is why chefs bring a bag with them. Leather knife roll, as it is known, is used to keep a batch of sharp kitchen knives. They are available in many stores or even online sites that specialized in selling kitchenware. You can even make it yourself provided you have the tools needed. Making it may look difficult because of its structure but the following steps will tell you that it is simple. This article will briefly explain each step in an understandable manner.

Kitchen knives must be prepared and arranged on your own preference. A pocket must be made. Just make sure there is an extra space available the basic area where the knife itself resides. Decide on the layout that you desire. Then, the basic area is measured according to its width and length. Doing so will help you determine how much leather will be needed. Consider also its length which will be used for covering the blades and handles.

Look for the best leather. Search online or go to the store nearest you. Whether you are buying online or on a shop, show to them your layout and explain to them about the knife roll that you are going to making. Once they understand what you really need, they will be the ones who will provide you the best type to use. Furthermore, the size should be larger by four hundred percent.

Preparation of the basic but needed materials. These supplies include, but not limited to, the sewing needles, glue, or mallet. You may opt to choose and use materials and supplies not commonly used by professional makers or experts.

Create a working copy for the design in paper. Using a kraft paper, create a copy of a coarse whip of a braid or better known as cowhide. A piece of kraft paper is laid out. It has to be larger than the cowhide which will be placed on top. With a marker, an outline is traced and cut out according to its shape.

Finalize its layout or design. Before that, makes some adjustments on it using the mockup copy. You can also arrange the knives to see if they are good enough.

Once the design has been finalized, apply it to the leather. Place the unfolded paper on a cowhide. Cut every part of it. Using glue, attach the straps and other related parts. Assemble them until the step is finished. Place the knives in their respective places to see if it is done right. Repeat it for few days so that the leather will be stretched.

To assure of security and prevent it to be damaged at early times of usage, make sure that it is properly sewed and glued. Finalize everything. Before doing so, make sure that the knives are properly placed. Make some adjustments on the design if there is any. Speaking of glue, leather glue is much preferred in this case but if you want to use an ordinary, it may be acceptable.
